Consciousness: Beyond Science and Measurement

"The technology which built a human brain was obviously of a superior order to that developed by the brain." — Swami Vivekananda

Science, despite its remarkable achievements, is not without limitations. When objects are either too close, too far, too small, or too large, they become imperceptible. This limitation arises from science's reliance on evidence obtained through devices. For instance, how do scientists unveil the existence of electrons, protons, and the nucleus of an atom? The answer lies in experiments conducted with the aid of sophisticated instruments.

The scientific definition of consciousness encompasses the state of being aware of one's surroundings, thoughts, and sensations. However, the enigma deepens when we ponder the fate of consciousness during sleep. Are we conscious of sleep itself? Upon awakening, we often remark on the quality of our rest without truly grasping how the passage of six hours slipped away, transporting us to another dimension.

In 2012, scientists made a groundbreaking discovery with the detection of the Higgs boson particle through the collision of two atomic nuclei. As we delve further into the quantum world, the laws of physics begin to falter, leaving us bewildered by phenomena such as quantum entanglement. The nature of the force that binds two quarks together remains shrouded in mystery.

In today's modern era, innovations like Elon Musk's BCI Chip offer tantalizing prospects for controlling digital devices with mere thought. Yet, despite these advancements, the dimensions of consciousness elude measurement by such technological marvels.

Ancient sages and saints have long offered insights into the development of consciousness. They assert that consciousness transcends the confines of the human body, permeating the universe and governing the laws of nature. According to their teachings, consciousness manifests in three distinct forms:

1. Simple Consciousness: Possessed by animals, enabling awareness of their body and surroundings.
2. Self-Consciousness: Exclusive to humans, fostering awareness of thoughts and emotions, thus enabling introspection.
3. Cosmic Consciousness: Attained by sages and saints, granting awareness of the universe and its underlying laws.

Despite the strides made by science, it faces a fundamental impasse when it comes to understanding consciousness. Devices, constructed from the material world, cannot grasp the ethereal nature of consciousness itself. As consciousness is considered the ultimate state of matter, it cannot be measured or manipulated by any form of material instrumentation. Thus, science must humbly yield to the wisdom of the sages and saints on matters pertaining to consciousness.
